Higher quality, larger file. JPG is lossy either way.

Why convert AVIF to JPG?

AVIF earns its place on a website and then becomes a nuisance the moment the file leaves the browser. Photoshop needs a recent version or a plugin, most desktop image viewers shrug, and mail clients and print shops treat it as an unknown attachment. JPG is the format that no longer has to be argued with.

What changes when AVIF becomes JPG

A lossy-to-lossy re-encode at quality 85 — a small generation loss on top of whatever AVIF already discarded. Invisible in normal viewing, but not free, so it is not something to round-trip repeatedly. AVIF can hold 10- and 12-bit HDR and JPEG cannot, so wide-gamut material is squeezed into 8 bits. Transparency is composited onto white.

Why this one is different

Every other AVIF to JPG converter uploads your files to their server, which is why they cap file sizes and ask you to sign up. This one does the work on your own machine, so it can afford not to.

Questions

How do I convert AVIF to JPG?

Drop your AVIF files onto the box above and each one is converted to JPG straight away. Then download the results, individually or together as a ZIP. There is no upload step and no account.

Why does my HDR photo look flatter?

JPEG is an 8-bit format with no way to express the extra range an AVIF can carry, so highlights and deep colours have to be compressed into a smaller space. PNG has the same 8-bit ceiling here; there is no high-dynamic-range target on this site.

Will the JPG be bigger than the AVIF?

Almost always, often by two or three times. AV1 is a far newer codec and is simply better at this. You are paying in bytes for compatibility.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in this tab. Your files are never sent to a server, which is why this still works if you disconnect from the network after the page has loaded.
