Where 100 KB comes from
100 KB is the limit more upload forms use than any other — job portals, university admissions, visa appointment systems, insurance claims. It is generous enough that a photograph can stay recognisable and tight enough that nothing straight off a modern phone will pass without help, which is why the page exists at all.
What it costs to get under 100 KB
For a typical 12-megapixel photo, expect the result to keep roughly a third of its width and land somewhere in the fifties for quality — enough that it still reads clearly at the size a reviewer will actually view it. Images that started small, like a screenshot or an already-resized profile picture, will usually keep every pixel and simply lose some quality. Either way the row states the final size, the quality used and whether it had to resize.

My form says 100 KB but rejects the file anyway
Check whether the limit is 100 KB or 100 kB as the form counts it — some portals mean 100,000 bytes rather than 102,400, and a file at 101 KB fails on a technicality. Drop the target one step, to 50 KB, and it will clear either reading.
Can I compress a PNG or a HEIC to 100 KB here?
Yes. Anything this page reads — HEIC, PNG, JPG, WebP, TIFF, GIF, BMP — comes out as a JPEG, because JPEG is the only one of them that can be told to hit a size. Transparency is flattened onto white on the way.
Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
