Where 300 KB comes from

300 KB turns up on visa applications, passport and licence renewals, and the better-designed job portals — forms whose authors worked out that a photograph needs somewhere to live. It is the first ceiling on this list where a full-resolution phone photo is genuinely in reach, so the trade stops being about what to sacrifice and starts being about how little you have to.

What it costs to get under 300 KB

Most 12-megapixel photos reach 300 KB on quality alone, somewhere in the high sixties, with every pixel of the original still there. That is well inside the range where the difference from the original is invisible at screen size and hard to find even at full zoom. Only very detailed frames — dense foliage, crowds, heavy grain from a low-light shot — push far enough to need resizing as well.

Why this one is different

Is 300 KB enough for a printed passport photo?

How does it decide when to stop?

It searches for the highest quality that still fits, rather than guessing one and hoping. Roughly eight trial encodes narrow it down, then a slower final pass squeezes a few more percent out at the same quality. That search is only affordable because it runs on your machine instead of a server.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?
