What Claude’s statistical watermark means, and which copy-and-paste problems a text cleaner can fix.
FormatDeck’s text cleaner does not remove or detect Claude’s statistical watermark. It fixes selected characters and spacing. A cleaned result says nothing about who wrote the text.
Can you remove a Claude watermark by deleting characters?
No. Anthropic describes a statistical watermark created through the choices Claude makes between possible words. It explicitly says that the watermark adds no hidden characters. Deleting zero-width spaces or changing punctuation does not undo that pattern.
What does this cleaner actually change?
Copying text between a chat, a document and a website can bring along non-breaking spaces or formatting characters. The linked tool removes selected zero-width spaces, byte-order marks and soft hyphens. It also replaces non-breaking spaces, trims line ends and removes long dashes by default. Ordinary hyphens, minus signs and numeric ranges stay intact. Every rule can be switched off; the tool does not rewrite sentences.

Does Claude watermark every response?
Anthropic’s August 2026 announcement describes watermarking for new models and a gradual rollout to older models. The signal depends on the word choices available, the amount of generated text and subsequent editing. Neither a few unusual characters nor an empty cleanup report can establish whether a passage is watermarked.

Is this a Claude watermark detector?
No. Anthropic’s statistical watermark requires its detection method and key. The linked cleaner reports formatting changes only; it never assigns an AI score or certifies human authorship.
Will this make text pass an AI detector?
There is no such guarantee. AI detectors and statistical watermark checks are different mechanisms. Normalizing spaces is useful for pasting and editing, but does not establish that text will pass either check.
Does this work with ChatGPT or other copied text?
