Higher quality, larger file. AVIF is lossy either way.

Why convert PNG to AVIF?

AVIF goes further than WebP on both counts: smaller files, and full transparency. For a site already serving modern browsers, converting PNG assets to AVIF is usually the single largest saving available on image weight.

What changes when PNG becomes AVIF

Encoded at quality 55 with a low effort setting, and this one is slow — AV1 encoding is heavy, and a large PNG can take several seconds in a browser tab. Transparency is preserved. The result is typically the smallest file you can get from the same source here.

Why this one is different

Every other PNG to AVIF converter uploads your files to their server, which is why they cap file sizes and ask you to sign up. This one does the work on your own machine, so it can afford not to.

Questions

How do I convert PNG to AVIF?

Drop your PNG files onto the box above and each one is converted to AVIF straight away. Then download the results, individually or together as a ZIP. There is no upload step and no account.

Why is it so much slower than WebP?

AV1 was designed for video, where an encoder is allowed to take its time. Even at the low effort setting used here it does far more work per image than WebP does. The payoff is the size.

Which browsers show AVIF?

Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge all support it in current versions. It is safe for the web; it is desktop applications and older software that are still catching up.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in this tab. Your files are never sent to a server, which is why this still works if you disconnect from the network after the page has loaded.
